L-Carnitine Injection 5 mL is a sterile solution containing levocarnitine, an amino acid derivative used to treat carnitine deficiency.  It is primarily indicated for:

• Acute and chronic treatment of patients with inborn errors of metabolism that cause secondary carnitine deficiency. 

• Prevention and treatment of carnitine deficiency in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing dialysis. 

The injection works by improving carnitine levels in the body, supporting fatty acid transport into mitochondria for energy production and helping alleviate metabolic abnormalities associated with carnitine deficiency. 

• Strength: Available in concentrations such as 200 mg/mL (1000 mg per 5 mL) or 2000 mg per 5 mL (as seen in some brands like L Carnibol). 

• Form: Typically supplied as a 5 mL ampoule or vial for intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration. 

• Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, or rash. These are usually mild and temporary. 

• Important Precautions:

  • Avoid in patients with hypersensitivity to levocarnitine or components of the formulation.

  • Use caution with warfarin; regular INR monitoring is advised due to potential interaction.

  • Monitor renal and hepatic function, especially in patients with impaired kidney or liver function.

  • Not recommended for use in trimethylaminuria (fish odor syndrome) or carnitine palmitoyltransferase II deficiency.
