Nitrofurantoin Sustained Release Tablets are a type of antibiotic used to treat and prevent bacterial infections in the urinary tract, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder infections (cystitis), and kidney infections. The sustained-release formulation ensures a gradual release of the active ingredient, nitrofurantoin, maintaining consistent therapeutic levels in the urine over an extended period, which enhances effectiveness and reduces dosing frequency. Each tablet contains 100 mg of nitrofurantoin, available in film-coated, round, bevelled, yellow scored tablets. It works by disrupting bacterial DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, ultimately killing the bacteria. The medication is typically taken orally, usually twice daily, and should be swallowed whole with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. It is not effective against viral infections such as colds or flu.
