  • Dosage: One tablet (0.5 mg) is taken once daily, with or without food, and should be swallowed whole. 

  • Onset of Effect: Improvements may take 3 to 6 months to become noticeable, as the prostate shrinks gradually. 

  • Off-Label Use: Although not FDA-approved for hair loss, dutasteride is sometimes prescribed off-label at 0.5 mg daily to treat male pattern baldness due to its potent DHT-lowering effect. 

  • Contraindications: Not for use in women, especially pregnant women or those who could become pregnant, due to the risk of causing birth defects in a male fetus.  Women should avoid handling crushed or broken tablets.

Dutasteride 0.5 mg tablets are a medication used primarily to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate that causes urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak urine flow, frequent urination, and urgency.  The tablets work by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—a hormone responsible for prostate growth.  By reducing DHT levels by up to 90%, dutasteride helps shrink the prostate gland, improving urinary flow and reducing the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for prostate surgery. 

amsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4mg Tablet is an alpha-adrenergic antagonist (alpha-blocker) primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.  It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow and reducing symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream, frequent urination, and urgency. 

• Mechanism of Action: Selectively blocks alpha1A-adrenoceptors in the prostate and bladder neck, reducing dynamic obstruction to urine flow. 

• Dosage: Typically 0.4 mg once daily, taken approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day (often after breakfast or dinner) to ensure consistent absorption. 

• Form: Available as a film-coated modified-release tablet; should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing. 

• Key Uses:

  • Relief of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to BPH.

  • May also be used off-label to aid in the passage of small kidney stones by relaxing the ureter.

• Important Warnings:

  • Not for use in women or children under 18.

  • Can cause orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing), so caution is advised when rising from sitting or lying positions.

  • Must be discontinued before cataract surgery due to the risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS).
