Tropicamide and Phenylephrine Eye Drops are a combination ophthalmic medication used primarily to dilate the pupil (mydriasis) and relax the eye's focusing muscles (cycloplegia).  This allows for a thorough examination of the internal structures of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and vitreous, during diagnostic procedures such as fundus examination, retinal photography, refractive error assessment, and preoperative evaluation for surgeries like cataract extraction or vitrectomy. 

• Mechanism of Action:

  • Tropicamide is an anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) agent that blocks the parasympathetic nervous system, preventing contraction of the iris sphincter muscle and ciliary muscle, leading to pupil dilation and cycloplegia.

  • Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic (alpha-1 adrenergic agonist) that stimulates the iris dilator muscle, further enhancing pupil dilation. 

• Clinical Use:

  • Diagnostic: Essential for retinal exams, especially in neonatal retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening, where combination therapy is twice as effective as tropicamide alone.

  • Therapeutic: Used in inflammatory conditions like uveitis to prevent posterior synechiae.

  • Surgical: Ensures adequate pupil dilation prior to intraocular surgery.

Ciplox D Eye/Ear Drops 10 ml is a combination medication manufactured by Cipla Ltd, used to treat bacterial infections and inflammation in the eyes and ears.  It contains two active ingredients: Ciprofloxacin (0.3% w/v), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting DNA replication, and Dexamethasone (0.1% w/v), a corticosteroid that reduces swelling, redness, and itching.  It also contains Benzalkonium chloride as a preservative.
