Key Uses

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including cystitis and pyelonephritis. 

• Respiratory Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis. 

• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Including cellulitis and abscesses. 

• Gastrointestinal Infections: Like infectious diarrhea (e.g., traveler’s diarrhea) and gastroenteritis. 

• Sexually Transmitted Infections: Effective against gonorrhea and chlamydia. 

• Other Infections: Prostatitis, bone/joint infections, and infections caused by plague or anthrax. 

Dosage & Administration

• Adults: Typically 250 mg twice daily, taken after meals. 

• Children (2–12 years): Dose based on weight (15 mg/kg/day, divided into two doses). 

• Adolescents (13–18 years): Same as adults, but dose may vary based on condition. 

• Course Duration: Usually 2 weeks, but varies by infection type and doctor’s advice. 

• Take with water, swallow whole—do not crush or chew.

Important Precautions

• Do not stop early—complete the full course to prevent antibiotic resistance. 

• Avoid: Dairy products, antacids (containing aluminum/magnesium), iron supplements, and calcium-fortified drinks (can reduce absorption). 

• Avoid alcohol—may increase side effects. 

• Photosensitivity: Avoid prolonged sun exposure; use sunscreen. 

• Tendon Damage: Risk of tendinitis or rupture, especially in older adults or those on corticosteroids.

• Neurological Effects: May cause dizziness, confusion, or nerve issues (numbness, tingling)—stop and consult doctor if noticed. 

Aripiprazole 5mg tablets are oral antipsychotic medications used to treat conditions such as schizophrenia, manic episodes in Bipolar I Disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.  They work by modulating dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain to restore chemical balance, improving symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, mood swings, and social withdrawal. 

• Appearance: Typically white to off-white round tablets, debossed with "5" on one side and "17" on the other (based on the DailyMed reference).  Some formulations may be blue-colored, modified rectangular-shaped tablets debossed with "62" and "H".

• Active Ingredient: Aripiprazole 5 mg per tablet. 

• Common Inactive Ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, mannitol, and silicon dioxide. Some formulations contain 76 mg lactose monohydrate per tablet. 

• Dosage: Usually taken once daily, with or without food.  The starting dose for adults is typically 10–15 mg/day, though individual titration may be required.  For adolescents (13–17 years), treatment often starts at 2 mg/day (using oral solution) and is titrated up to 10 mg/day.

• Key Warnings:

  • Increased risk of mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviors may occur, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults.

  • May cause elevated blood sugar, weight gain, and metabolic changes; regular monitoring is advised.

  • Avoid alcohol and driving due to drowsiness and dizziness.

• Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to aripiprazole or any excipient; use with caution in hepatic impairment and in patients with cardiovascular conditions.
