ydroxychloroquine 400 mg tablets are a prescription medication primarily used to treat autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).  They are also used for the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria caused by non-chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium parasites.  Additionally, it may be prescribed off-label to help improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. 

The active ingredient, hydroxychloroquine sulfate (400 mg), works by suppressing the overactive immune system, reducing inflammation, and interfering with the growth of malaria parasites.  It is classified as a Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug (DMARD).

• Dosage:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis / SLE: 400 mg daily, divided into two doses.

  • Malaria (treatment): 800 mg initially, followed by 400 mg at 6, 24, and 48 hours. 

• Administration: Take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. 

• Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and skin rash.  Serious but rare risks include retinopathy (eye damage), hearing problems, and heart rhythm disturbances.
