Isotretinoin 5 mg Softgel Capsules are a prescription medication classified as a retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A, used primarily for the treatment of severe nodular acne that has not responded to other therapies like antibiotics.  The active ingredient, isotretinoin, works by significantly reducing sebum (oil) production in the skin's sebaceous glands, which helps prevent the formation of acne lesions. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can kill acne-causing bacteria. 

• Mechanism of Action: Acts on sebaceous glands to reduce sebum production, decreases inflammation, and helps normalize skin cell turnover. 

• Common Side Effects: Dry skin, dry lips, dry eyes, dry nose, cracked lips, increased liver enzymes, and skin sensitivity to sunlight. These are usually temporary and improve with time. 

• Serious Warnings:

  • Pregnancy: Highly unsafe. Even a single dose can cause severe birth defects or pregnancy loss.  Strict contraception is required for women of childbearing age.

  • Breastfeeding: Unsafe; the drug may pass into breast milk and harm the baby.
