Amoxicillin Potassium Clavulanate Tablets IP are a combination antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections. The tablets contain amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, and potassium clavulanate (clavulanic acid), a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents certain bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin. This combination enhances the effectiveness of amoxicillin against a broader range of bacteria, including those that produce beta-lactamase enzymes to resist antibiotics. Common formulations include strengths such as 500 mg amoxicillin + 125 mg clavulanic acid (e.g., FORLIC-CV-625, DMOXY-CLAV 625) or 875 mg amoxicillin + 125 mg clavulanic acid. They are used to treat infections of the respiratory tract (e.g., pneumonia, sinusitis), urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues. The medication is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu. It should be taken as prescribed, completing the full course even if symptoms improve. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and stomach discomfort; serious adverse reactions such as severe allergic reactions, liver dysfunction, or Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea require immediate medical attention. Patients with a history of penicillin allergy, severe kidney or liver disease, or a past reaction to this medication should avoid it.
